The Psychological Effects of Alcoholic Parents on Children
Abstract: This paper examines the psychological, social, academic, and behavioral effects of parental alcoholism on children. Children raised in households affected by alcohol use disorder often experience emotional distress, low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and difficulties in social and academic functioning. The paper discusses how unstable family environments contribute to long-term challenges that may persist into adulthood, including relationship difficulties and increased vulnerability to substance misuse. It also highlights the importance of early intervention, counseling, support groups, and positive social support systems. The discussion emphasizes that although parental alcoholism can have significant negative consequences, appropriate support and protective factors can promote resilience and recovery.
